We were asked to take a photo with the theme resilience. For this I took a photo of my mum and in the background there are photos of my aunt. In 2004 my aunt died from dehydration and the resilience in his photo is shown by how my mum continued to live in a world without her sister. I thought I'd turn the photo black and white in order to make it more sincere, however during the editing process I decided to change my idea slightly and leave some parts of the photo in colour.
This is the original photo I took of my mum. I wanted a portrait of her and wasn't sure whether I wanted her looking at the camera or looking to the side. In the end I chose the one where she's looking at the camera because you can see her whole face and therefore her emotions can be read more easily.

This is the edited version of the photo. The parts of the photo which I decided to leave in colour are the photos of my aunt that are in the background and a poem which is linked to aunt. The rest of the photo is in black and white which contrast to normal photos as it's usually that the person who's dead is in black and white but in my photo it's the opposite.

Simon Way
An artist who takes many pictures under the theme of resilience is Simon Way. He has been to the past 3 Paralympic games and has taken a series of photos showing their resilience to competing and participating in the games despite their disabilities. In some of his photos it's unclear as to what their disability is which makes you have to really look and pay attention to the photo. The three photos to the right are all photos Way has taken at a mix of London, Rio and Beijing. These are the three which really stood out to me as it shows a mix of different emotions which are felt throughout a competition and these photos show that even though the athletes are disabled they can still complete like any able bodied person. |
